Summative entry

The first of my blog posts was an ekphrastic poem that reflects on Pablo Picassos Le demoiselles d'avignon. This poem attempted to capture the perspective of the women within the painting. Picasso often depicted paintings which strove to challenge the status quo and reflected societal issues. In this particular painting Picasso explores such themes asContinue reading "Summative entry"

Hey Evelyn,I absolutely agree with your perspectives of Owen's work, believing them to be, similarly to you, revealing of the devastation of wars. Furthermore, I believe they strongly reflect his complete abhorrence for the death and destruction that faced the youthful soldiers. Addressing and relating these to modern society was quite poignant and absolutely vitalContinue reading "Peer review 4"

Much of the literature of the 20th Century has been written in response to momentous events such as the first and second world wars. Draw up a short list of some of the momentous events that have been hitting our planet in the last 5 years and suggest a few ways in which writers might try to make sense of any one of these events. Your response to this suggestion, might itself be a piece of creative prose or poetry

The last five years have brought about devastating events. Such events may have resulted in impacts on a global scale or specific to singular countries. 2016 brought about the most unexpected of American elections, ushering in a new age of reality TV politics. The election of Donald Trump was quite shocking to the world. InitiallyContinue reading "Much of the literature of the 20th Century has been written in response to momentous events such as the first and second world wars. Awesome Blog post Andrew! The addition of alphabetical order certainly would have provided an amazing challenge to have completed but provides such an excellent demonstration of Alliteration. I applaud you for the amazing effort put into creating a piece that not only experiments with language but produces some beautiful sounds. The precise choice of wordsContinue reading "Peer Review 3"

Virginia Woolf believes in the power of the imagination to liberate human beings from

To some imagination is thoughtfully escaping reality to wondrous worlds unknown to them. These worlds grant liberation hitherto undreamt of. To others it is a fool escaping reality because they are unable to bear its gravity. My thoughts align more firmly with that of Virginia Woolf, I believe the power of imagination is to liberateContinue reading "Virginia Woolf believes in the power of the imagination to liberate human beings from"

2/ Near the end of Eliot’s “The Waste Land” he writes

“These fragments I have shored against my ruin”. In the spirit of Eliot’s vision of the world, write a poem or a short prose passage that uses this line as its opening. These fragments I have shored against my ruin. I gather the shards of mana, delicately and place them into my basket. I lookContinue reading "2/ Near the end of Eliot’s “The Waste Land” he writes"

Write a letter to Sassoon or Owen telling them that their vision, their ideas are still sorely needed in the world today.

Dear Mr Owen,  I kindly implore you to return to the land of the living if it's within your power, as your keen insight and mind are sorely needed in the world today. The world today is ripe with issues that I'm sure you would, similarly to me, experience a great distaste for. We areContinue reading "Write a letter to Sassoon or Owen telling them that their vision, their ideas are still sorely needed in the world today."

An ekphrastic poem is a poem that vividly describes a painting, such as X.J. Kennedy’s poem “Nude Descending a Staircase” (refer to slides for lecture in Week 2). Try to write your own ekphrastic poem with reference to any one of the paintings shown to you during lectures in the first two weeks. Include an image of the painting in your blog.

We rigid five stand frozen in time Our shapely feminine bodies call to you Clothes strewn about the floor Our eyes beckon any who dare lie with us.  Ready to commit any act of depravity you choose We are unique, yet you see no difference Our colour is faded, weathered and aged We were onceContinue reading "An ekphrastic poem is a poem that vividly describes a painting, such as X.J.
