Adventures At Merry Beach

For Judith Wright the mountain has its own meaning. Describe a favourite place that has a real meaning for you, that you hate to see destroyed.

I believe a little backstory is required to begin. My girlfriend, Bianca, and her family travel down the coast to Merry Beach every year in January. This year I was invited along and spent two amazing weeks there. The adventures we had in Merry came at a most opportune time, I was working 50+ hours per week and was desperate for time off.

Upon arrival, my nostrils were instantly filled with the distinct scent of the beach and Australia’s natural flora. I quite quickly noticed just how far removed we were as there was no cell reception and wildlife was everywhere. After a mere few hours I had reached a state of extreme relaxation. Bianca and I spent our days on the beach baking in the warmth of the sun where I would fish, with little success, and she would read. I would find small granules of sand in every nook and cranny, I didn’t mind though, to me it was like a full body exfoliation. I came to understand the deep love of Merry Beach that Bianca had.

The time spent at Merry Beach was such a poignant time for me. I gained beautiful memories and found what I consider to be my favourite place in the world. I would hate to see a place that is so special and significant for me destroyed. I eagerly await the return next year to “my mountain” for more unsuccessful fishing.

  1. Jared that is a great start! You write well, with passion and clarity. There is only one detail which I did not fully “get”: I would find small granules of sand in every nook and cranny. For a reader it is hard to know what exactly this is referring to: the rocks around the beach (strange?), your own body (weird?)….. clarification needed….
