Summative Entry

This blog addresses the concept that “Australia is not a finished product” By utilising relevant Australian literature it discusses the linear progression of Australian writing. Through a series of individual blog posts which discuss different topics, either critically or creatively, this blog discusses this concept.

My initial blog post introduces Judith Wright’s idea “the mountain has its own meaning”. In this creative entry address this idea by giving a comparison of my favourite place in the world and why it’s so significant to me. This blog was possibly my most enjoyable post to write as it allowed me to discuss a location that has stuck with me so strongly and means so much to me.

My second blog post was in a critical writing style with my own topic. Within this one I discussed the differences in the portrayal of the subject matter and the style of writing between Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson. This blog is was an interesting discussion, it stemmed from a conversation that occurred during a tutorial that intrigued me and I wanted to explore further.

My third blog post was a creative response, describing the artwork Milford sound by Eugene Von Gerard, in prose form. This artwork was my stuck with me most that day. It had a mystical appearance to it which I loved, it appeared as if from another world. The detail and meticulous work put into the artwork was truly amazing. This one inspired me to one day travel to New Zealand to see this location.

My fourth blog post was another creative piece, where I wrote a letter to meg, from down at Down at the dump, about her relationship with Lummy. When writing this piece, I found myself particularly intrigued by the concept of acting in the way a person sees fit. Being forced into something by someone is wrong and that’s what I told Meg, I told her to do what she wants. I wholeheartedly believe everyone should follow this idea, I believe too many people care what others think of them and their actions and shouldn’t be limited by this.

My fifth blog post was a critical writing piece discussing some of the interesting in Kim Scott’s That deadman dance. This blog post is in my opinion the best blog post. I found the novel to be deeply layered with meaning and screaming to be analyzed. The two points I discussed were the progressive development of racism throughout the book and the character Jak Tar. These were the two points that stood out quite heavily to me, However, I found that I could have discussed the novel in greater detail as I found it to be my favourite text from this semester by far. https://jaredmarksbrain.home.blog/2019/10/07/discussing-interesting-ideas-in-kim-scotts-that-deadman-dance/

To complete this summative entry, I believe that the concept that “Australia is not a finished product” is spot on. The nature of literature has developed over these last few centuries and I believe this will continue to develop. Australia is a country ripe with inspiration and will continue to inspire writers into the future. It is in the nature of literature to evolve and grow over time, I doubt Australia will ever be a finished product.
